Well, it was time to upgrade the Mini finally. I'm now running Gallery 2.x and Rails 1.1. I discovered a new Rails "White Screen of Death" while I was porting this ancient blog to Rails 1.1. If you declare a layout with a dot (.) in the name, Rails will just spaz out and show you the WSOD, with no errors in any logs anywhere! Quite a lot of fun to track that down on a Friday night.

I also found a small bug in Gallery 2 which I need to send in a patch for. If your Gallery 1 data files contain a reference to a photo or movie that does not actually exist on the disk, the import process will suddenly stop. The outward symptom is that your import will appear to hang with the orange progress bar only partially complete. The quick fix I came up with was to skip photos and albums that don't exist. That enabled me to import 3000 photos and albums without any more problems. Other than that minor flaw, the Gallery 2 installation and import really impressed me with how easy it was.

We're out in the desert this week, biking, camping, and checking out dinosaurs. We spent most of last week in Fruita, Colorado, before driving down to Moab, where we've been hanging out this weekend. Highlights from the trip thus far:
  • Elly got a new bike.
  • Tova spent her first night outdoors in the tent.
  • We saw the Dinosaur Museum in Fruita.
  • Went on a hike in Arches National Park.
Here are some pics.
